Multi-Criteria Benchmarking of Waste Valorization Routes

2018

Research intern, EDF R&D Chatou (Master's thesis)

Research case study

Internship study at EDF R&D Chatou benchmarking waste-to-energy schemes against incineration and landfill on energy yield, treatment cost, material recovery, and greenhouse gases.

About this study.

During my end-of-study internship at EDF R&D Chatou (MFEE Department, April to August 2018), supervised by Sébastien Gros and Claude Basdevant, I built a multi-criteria framework to compare energy recovery routes from waste. The study covers waste characterization, a technology panorama, and two case studies: five schemes for metropolitan residual waste, and alternative schemes for two island communities in the French overseas territories, La Nouvelle (60 inhabitants) and Le Cirque de Mafate (700). This is an internship research and consulting deliverable, not a commercial deployment.

Three-part methodology: waste characterization, a valorization-route panorama, then EDF case studies, with sharing sessions and exchanges across MFEE, EIFER and TREE.Adrianto, L. R. (2018). End-of-study internship final defense, EDF R&D Chatou / École Polytechnique.
Techno-economic results across the five metropolitan schemes: annual electricity (86–205 GWh) and heat output, overall efficiency (0.49–0.57), CAPEX (104–190 M€) and OPEX.Adrianto, L. R. (2018). Multi-criteria benchmarking of energy recovery routes from wastes (Final report, EDF R&D Chatou / École Polytechnique).
Treatment cost per tonne of waste: 75 €/t for a large 100 MWth incinerator up to 153 €/t for a 10 MWth unit, with TMB-based schemes at 107–117 €/t against the landfill (65–75 €/t) and incineration (75–110 €/t) ranges.Adrianto, L. R. (2018). End-of-study internship final defense, EDF R&D Chatou / École Polytechnique.
Material recoverability: direct incineration schemes send about 12.6% of the input to landfill, while TMB-based schemes recover 87% of metals and inert in good condition and landfilling stays below 10%.Adrianto, L. R. (2018). End-of-study internship final defense, EDF R&D Chatou / École Polytechnique.
Greenhouse-gas balance per tonne of household waste when energy valorization displaces fuel-oil electricity: the combustion and gasification schemes turn net-negative (−0.29 to −0.38 tCO2 per tonne), unlike the open-burning reference.Adrianto, L. R. (2018). Multi-criteria benchmarking of energy recovery routes from wastes (Final report, EDF R&D Chatou / École Polytechnique).
